A Few of My Favorite Things

I woke up yesterday morning to the sound of silence, how strange to have silence on Christmas morning.  The clock read 8:00 a.m.  Hmmm…better do a kid check.  Oh! 17 yr. old daughter asleep next to me.  21 yr. old son asleep in his room.  Is it Christmas morning?  I better go check my calendar.

The phone rings and my husband, who has just finished the night shift, wants to know what he's missed.  Not a thing, I tell him, you've got perfect timing!  And so I swiftly rouse two sleepy heads to remind them it's Christmas morning, pop our breakfast in the oven, and put the coffee on.

We are soon floating in a sea of glitter (note to self: NO glitter wrapping paper next year) and I sit back and watch the three of them enjoy opening gifts, laughing and being silly.  At the same time I am reminded of how different our Christmas mornings looked just a few years ago.  This is not bad, of course, just different.

I spend the day watching my rather grown-up children interacting with their grandparents and Uncle and I'm reminded that change comes quietly, reminding me to enjoy every moment and to embrace the season of life that we find ourselves in.  Many blessings and much joy come when we learn to be content where we are with what we have.

"I know what it is to be in need,
and I know what it is to have plenty.
I have learned the secret of being content
in any and every situation,
whether well fed or hungry,
whether living in plenty or in want.

  2. I had to remind myself, when I felt like cancelling Christmas a couple of weeks ago, that Christmas, like all things in life, has changed. We are in a different season of our lives.
    I wouldn't really have cancelled it - it was just a passing thought. I'm so glad I didn't: Older Grandson (nearly two)loved it all, even though he got a bit overwhelmed with too many presents!

    As Bonnie Hunter wrote on her blog: we should "make wonderful memories that will last a life time."

    I remember thinking the same thoughts of the changes of Christmas coming to my household as each of my children left home. The early mornings of Christmas are no longer a part of our routine, but I am so thankful to have most or all of the children and their families celebrate with us each year. It is more hectic/chaotic now but at least I get to sleep in. :)

  4. Lovely posting, Renee. I have grown children, as well, and I'm so thankful they live across the street from us and spend the entire Christmas day in our home. Is it different from 25 years ago? Yes, quite...but lovely in it's own realm. You are so wise in saying we need to be content with where we are and what we have! Blessings in the new year to you and your family.

  5. Same here, Renee! But now I have the grands who come over on Christmas eve. My grandboy told me that he was so excited that he was shaking and almost crying during their car ride over! ;) That made it so worth while! ♥

  6. I was thinking the same thing...Christmas morning has changed...my girls use to wake me up at 5am...now I wake them up at 7am. We still start early but it is because of my excitement now.

You must have been eavesdropping in my conversations with #1 husband...we had a conversation Christmas Eve and later Christmas Day about how different Christmas had become over time yet in each "season" we felt content. I once thought as a young mother that not having little children on Christmas morning would be such a tragedy and dreaded those days to come. However, as each of my children have grown and left home, married, and brought Grandchildren into my world. the celebrations have had to change to accommodate extended family, in-laws/outlaws, etc...LOL Yet, I'm CONTENT!! I think that may be my word for 2012...Content.
