Simple Pleasures

In the summer of 1987 I was busily preparing for my August wedding.  I stopped by an Osco Drug Store and ran in to grab a couple of items.  Walking by the magazine rack, this issue caught my eye.  I picked it up and began looking through the pages.  What happened next was a moment that forever seared my mind, it was as if I had an awakening.  I realize this sounds a bit dramatic, but honestly, at that moment it was if I had stepped into a foreign land but had arrived home all at the same time.  Looking back on it now, I consider it a gift from God that He took that moment to show me what it would be that I would come to love; beauty, family, elegance, vintage...the list could go on and on.

So my love affair with Victoria magazine began and I happily found myself devouring every issue.  As a new bride it helped me to see home and family in a whole new way.  I started to develop a love for cameos which were oftened featured in their pictures.  When the arrival of my son came three years later, my husband surprised me with this beautiful ring.

Not long after my daughter was born, four years later, my Grandmother passed away.   This cameo, belonging to her was given to me.  These two pieces of jewelry mean a great deal to me and I hope to pass them on to future grandchildren.  Who would have thought that a trip into a local drugstore and a magazine, would develop a love that would lead to a family heirloom?

  1. What a beautiful heirloom to pass on. I remember as a child a girl in my class had a cameo and I remember admiring it.

  3. I, too, discovered Victoria magazine while waiting in a drug store. I picked up my first issue in 1996 and immediately fell in love. I was crushed when the magazine became discontinued in 2003, but was able to purchase just over 2 years of back issues on Ebay that kept me busy until Victoria re-launched a couple years ago. I am so glad to know that this magazine is valued by others as well!

  4. I don't know if I should admit to this...but I have EVERY issue saved from their very first issue. My husband and I had built a Victorian home, and my neighbor found the magazine and KNEW I had to have it.
The years with Nancy Lindemeyer as editor were the best. I still go thru the magazines, pulling out the stack for each month and savoring them with a cup of tea. The beauty of this magazine is timeless.

  8. Renee, I don't know when I've enjoyed a post more. Seriously. I don't know what it was about this, but I loved how you related the story. I, too, love Victoria magazine, although I don't see it on the stands as often as I used to. I need to subscribe.

That cameo ring is just gorgeous! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. What a great heirloom for your family.

You should send this post as a letter to the magazine. The editors would love it.

So glad you joined us for Simple Pleasures today.

Your cameos are gorgeous and what treasured memories they are linked to! My youngest daughter (Victoria!)began a collection of cameos as a child, nothing valuable but pretty none the less.
