Tuesday's Unwrapped

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink; or about your body,
what you will wear.  Is not life more important than
food, and the body more important than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap
or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father
feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

I almost missed the hummingbird.  I've been wondering where they are this summer.  I was caught completely off guard when it flew up to my face and was chattering away, then lighted on the flower near me and set to work gathering food.  I stood there a bit dumb-struck.  It had been here all along.  I just never bothered to stop focusing on all the "stuff" going on in my life to notice.

"And why do you worry about clothes?  See how the
lilies of the field grow.  They do not labor or spin.  Yet
I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was
dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the
grass of the field which is here today and tomorrow is
thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you,
O you of little faith?  So do not worry saying, 'What shall
we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  For the pagans run
after all these things, and your heavenly Fathers knows
that you need them.

The self-inflicted hamster wheel is tiring me.  Most of the things I fret about are really not important at all.  They are simply diversions that keep me from seeing the things that the Lord has planned for me today.  As I fret, spin, not sleep, get cranky, put off my quiet time with God, I waste my day away.  I'm amazed at how something like the wrong dryer being delivered can rob me of joy and change the tone of my day, a day that I will never get back.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry
about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own."  Matthew 6:25-34

The daisies in my garden have just opened.  They are tilted at an angle, reaching for the warmth of the sun.  Today I will spend some time in the garden, looking for the hummingbird, appreciating the flowers, pondering God's word and what he is telling me through this scripture.  I hope that like the daisy, I will look up, and reach for the warmth of the Savior and let the rest of the "stuff" fade away.

  1. I can identify with your post sooo much! I, too, have been distracted with what life throws my way. I pray you have a day of refreshment as you "walk with the Lord in your garden." He is such an awesome Father; He is always waiting for us to be with Him. He has such a way of breathing life into our tired souls.

  4. Thanks, Renee. Your morning devotional was just what I needed. I have been worrying about those things and need to remember God's promises.
More time in the garden?? Yes, pulling weeds counted this morning because it was just after dawn and the beauty and quiet gave me time to be thankful for such an awesome God.
