Last night I saw "Alice in Wonderland" and I can't stop thinking about it today. Was it bizzare? Yes. Did I follow most of it? No. The special effects were amazing and the costumes were incredible. Honestly, it was really strange. My daughter commented on the way out that she heard that Lewis Caroll was on drugs when he wrote the book. I don't know if that's true, but I can understand how one could make a case for it.
Today, I plan on watching the Disney version. Not only will it enchant me, but will also remind me of when my children were little, and things were much simpler (for so many reasons).
If I get super motivated I might reread the book, which is really the best way to try to understand the story in the first place. No movie can quite capture the pictures your imagination dreams up while reading a good story.

We're going to see Alice this afternoon. I thought the casting sounded perfect. I always expect a lot of quirkiness if Johnny Depp is starring.

but, my teenaged daughter and i loved it.
the colors, costumes, make-up special
effects and acting was incredible.
i loved how restrained and vulnerable
johnny depp was.
now having said that, i still think it is
much too 'dark' for children.

I too prefer the good old Walt Disney versions. Modern versions don't always mean better. Some things are best left alone....if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Jimminy Cricket rocks!! (ha ha)
ReplyDeleteMy daughters were going to see it today. i wait with interest for their opinions. On holiday in the new Forest MANY years ago, we went and looked at Alice Liddell's gravestone.

My 19yo son was assigned the movie by his English professor since they've been studying childrens literature. He took his 17yo brother. They did say it was "strange" but they didn't like it at all. Ah well, I wouldn't expect them to.

My understanding is it is actually a political commentary. Something to do with to something going on at the time? Hmm should have paid closer attention in Politcal Science in college. We won't talk about how long ago that was!
