Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments yesterday on the cafe. I want to answer some questions from you about the cafe. The Garden Gate Cafe is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Nancy and Doug Knobloch are the owners. They are friends of ours and I have been working with them in various ways over the past few years. Two years ago I became their event coordinator at their farm which hosts outdoor weddings and other events. They have asked me to be their event coordinator for the restaurant also. I will be the primary contact and planner for such things as tea parties, birthday parties, showers and special events like rehearsal dinners, book club dinners and just about anything else that we can come up with. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch so the evenings open up all kinds of possibilities for special events. I'm thinking about ladies craft nights, guest speakers and that sort of thing. We have eight weddings on the books for this summer at the farm so it looks like I've got my work cut out for me, but it's all so fun! I get to work with people I love who allow me to have such creative freedom in what I do for them. A job doesn't get much better than that! I'm feeling very thankful and blessed by it all. A Cup of Cuteness

Oh friends, I wish I could meet you at the door of the new cafe, pour you a fresh cup of coffee and give you the most delectable cupcake. We could have a seat and talk for hours! I so wish that was true. I want to share with you today some shots of the cafe. Friday night we were open for a sneak preview and gave out samples of the goodies. I almost missed it, having come down with the flu on Thursday, but I was able to attend for a bit - the result of much prayer. The official opening date is March 12.

Everywhere you look is cuteness and creativity. We had pendant lights made out of vintage cake carriers. I spent some time yesterday drawing on the chalkboards with chalk markers - teacups, cupcakes and curliques - along with the menu of course!

My window display made the front page of the local newspaper on Friday. It was like getting asked to the prom by your dream guy! I'm so happy that customers love it! The building is a historical building which has been taken care of wonderfully. The floors are gorgeous!

The vintage Maytag washing machine always stirs a ton of interest. People take pictures of it and share their memories of their moms washing with one. I pray that God will bless the work of many hands as we embark on this adventure. To see our newest chef/baker go here. That is an amazing story for another day!

I can't believe it's the first Monday of the month already. Seems like I was just sending out the last giveaway. I should be calling this one "March Madness" because that's what it feels like to me. Tomorrow the new cafe is open for a sneak peek. I finished the window display yesterday.

In the afternoon I picked up the quilt I made for the cafe. The pattern is called "Cakewalk" by Lori Holt. I nearly burst into tears when I saw the wonderful quilting my quilter/friend, Mary, did on it.

The pictures absolutely do not give this quilt justice. It has been dark and grey in Kalamazoo and the pictures reflect it.

Because Nancy specializes in cupcakes, I put three blocks in with cupcakes on cakestands. I then embroidered a dome around them and put a button on for a handle. I love how it turned out.

This quilt ranks number one in fun for me. I loved every minute of this process. From the "baking" to picking out the right cakestand to decorating the cupcakes. I think another one of these quilts may be in my future. Thank you Lori! You made my quilting, creative day!

A New Venture

I apologize for being absent lately. My friend and employer, Nancy, is opening her new restaurant this Friday. There has been much to do to prepare and I have been very busy. I will have lots of photos to show later this week. The Garden Gate Cafe is a quaint little spot downtown in a very cool old building. I am currently working on the window display and getting the binding on a quilt I made for the front entrance. It will be open for breakfast and lunch and she specializes in cupcakes. I might have to put elastic in all my clothing!

I'm still buried under a puffy blanket of snow. A good excuse not get out of sweats today, don't you think? I saw this picture on Pinterest the other day. It reminds me of my husbands side of the closet. My husband has been wearing a bow tie to work every day for as long as he's been working ( if he's not in scrubs). He decided in medical school that he wanted to have a way for patients to remember who their doctor was. We've had a good time purchasing bow ties over the years and I've enjoyed people saying "Is that your husband with the bow-tie?" Enjoy your Saturday!

Yesterday I went to meetings and ran my errands without a coat on. This is the view from my back porch this morning. The thing about snow, it's so quiet. I stood with the door open looking at the flakes softly falling and enjoying the silence. Not even a bird was chirping. Yesterday's Cardinal has found a place to stay out of the wind. We're expecting a few more inches. It's beautiful!

Pretty Little Hexies

A few years back my daughter received this lovely afghan from her Great Auntie Martha. Recently I was going through things I had packed away for her and found it. I told her we were going to use it and enjoy it's beauty. No point in waiting for that day when she will have her own home, she can still use it then, why not enjoy it now?

I wish you could see this afghan up close. It is comprised of hundreds of tiny crocheted hexagons. It reminds me so much of the Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt pattern that I love (and have not made). I know the hours and hours of labor that went into this gift. I'm so glad that she made it for Maddie. Next time I see sweet Great Auntie Martha, I'll have to hug her a bit longer.

Mama-ache

Sunday afternoon my son, Taylor, called me. He was giving his testimony to his Bible study group at college that night and he was feeling nervous. I could relate having shared the story of my journey to God recently with a large group. My eyes went back to the puzzle he made in middle school wood shop. What was it like for him then, just 13, in the public school carving a picture of the resurrection? Did he get ridiculed? My eyes rested on the open tomb. Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe… I decided to go to church that night. Pastor was speaking on prayer. Four times that night we sang, "I love you, Lord". That's when the Mama-ache started.

When Taylor was little, he had a hard time going to sleep. For quite some time I would rub his back and sing "I love you, Lord" to get him to sleep at night. Three years ago, on our last Sunday at church, before he was leaving for college, we sang that song. My eyes welled up as I remembered all those nights. I took Taylor's hand. He leaned over to me and said, "I remember". That's when the ugly cry started. That moment is as vivid as if it happened yesterday.

Today, Mama-ache was unbearable. His schedule hasn't permitted him to come home lately so I decided to go see him. I wrapped his valentines gift and started out. He and I arrived at his apartment at the same time. I had to look twice at him. "You cut your hair?", I said. "Yes, it was really long and with baseball starting…", he replied. And for a moment he wasn't 21, he was the buzz-cut little boy that left me valentines cut out of construction paper.

At times I've noticed that when you share that you miss your child who's away at college people think that you haven't let go or that you don't embrace where they are in their lives right now. I disagree. I am so pleased with the man he is becoming but there are times when Mama-ache, for whatever reason, takes hold and brings us back to what was and for a little while I mourn that passing. I don't find anything wrong with that. A couple hours later, Mama-ache subsided, I was back on the road. The sun was shining brightly and I thanked God for Taylor and for a wonderful visit.

My friend, Sally, gave me a vintage ice crusher called the Swing-A-way for my birthday. If it's possible to nearly faint over a vintage kitchen gadget, then I did, and I'm not embarrassed to say so. It still works like a charm. The fact that it's in that lovely shade of vintage pink just about did me in. The Swing-A-Way can opener came on the market in the 1930's invented by a man named Idus Rhodes. Somewhere along the way the ice crusher was made. Highly popular, it has been produced in many colors and can be found easily and is quite affordable. A very fun gift to receive!

A friend of mine is going to be a first time Grandma and I get to attend a shower for the new Mama this weekend. I had a lot of fun making a receiving blanket from a yard of cotton and a yard of flannel. I crocheted the edge using the tutorial on You Go Girl. I've used this trim on pillowcase edges before. Cassie does a wonderful job of guiding you through the process. The hat is knit from a pattern in the book, "Itty Bitty Hats" by Susan B. Anderson. It's just a wee thing, newborn size. I'm loving the bright colors in the grey of winter. Have a wonderful Friday!

Yes, He Is...

Today's gift comes from the hands of my friend, Char. She is a wonderful lady full of faith and creative charm. Char lives in the most beautiful log cabin out in the country with her husband Tom and their gentle horse. A trip to Char's house is always a welcome invitation. She is a fabulous cook, as well, and makes the most delicious pineapple upside down cake in a cast iron pan. Every chance her friends get to eat that cake and visit her house we drop everything and go! Char made me this picture. It took over two hours to cut the sheep. She printed the music onto the prettiest paper and aged the frame to a wonderful color. Such a treasure!

This lovely little hoop came from Shann at Daisy's Are My Favorite Flower. It was a fun birthday surprise she made for me. Shann's right, I'm sew happy! I have a little story to tell you about Shann and I. It's a story of God working and God revealing. I love it when He allows us to see His hand in our lives. A couple years back, Shann lived in another state and she started reading my blog. Her husband had a job change and it brought them to Michigan. I blogged one day about a barn sale I was involved in and she figured out it was not far from her. So to my delight, she came to the barn sale and introduced herself. I was so thrilled to meet a blogging buddy. When I asked her where she lived now, she told me. I'm certain that my jaw remained on the ground the whole day - she lives about 5 minutes from my house. One Sunday later I turned around to find her and her husband at the church we attend. We both broke out in giggles. It was confirmed, we were to be friends. I don't get to see Shann often as she is a working lady with a busy household, like me, but when we do get together, we talk as if we've known each other forever. We may have only known each other for a short time, but one thing is certain, God has known forever that we would be friends. Don't you love it when God does that?

Blog Tips with Keren from FPTFY!

It's Keren from Free Pretty Things, and I am SO thrilled Renee asked me to be here today!

Today, I'll be giving you a few tips on how to make your blog a little more appealing and a few other tidbits that I hope you might find useful. Here we go!

Blog Tips/DOs and DON'Ts:

1. Use the New Blogger Designer Templates. The Simple Template is my favorite. Be sure to choose the LAST option. Example shown below.

This option has a clean white background with NO SHADOWS around the blog border. No Shadows are a good thing :) Without them, everything looks nice and clean.

2. If you choose to have a Background on your blog, try to have the LEAST amount of clutter on your sidebars. You don't want your readers to feel overwhelmed when they come to your blog. BUT sometimes, you HAVE to have lots of buttons and information on your sidebars. If that is the case, do try to leave your blog without a background or at least a very LIGHT colored background.

3. Try to fight the urge of having music on your blog. Why you ask? Well, I can't speak for all bloggers out there but as for me, I do my Blog surfing Late at night or during my little girl's nap time. SOMETIMES, I forget to turn my speakers off and while I'm clicking way to view your latest fabulous post, I and my sound asleep toddler (that took 2 hrs to finally put down, BTY) are frightfully startled and awaken by your most favorite rocking tunes. Not cool.Did you know some readers will actually hear your music start, and as quickly as possible click off your page and NEVER return Just because your blog is "one of those blogs". Sad, but true :(

4. If you have a 3 column blog, try to keep your 2 sidebars only on ONE side of your blog. This is just because its easier on the eyes and readers only have to look to one side to view all of your information ... This is especially true if you are using your Blog as a way to bring revenue to your home. Your Sponsors will get Lots more click this way, because everything is nice and neat and Easy to view.

5. Take advantage of the New Blogger Templates Footer Layouts. Example shown below.

As you can see, these new Footer Layouts give you a lot more room to add important information without cluttering up those sidebars.

6. Let your Readers be able to find things easily on your blog. (A) Always have LABELS on ALL your post. NOT a MILLION of them but, essential ones. (B) Have a Search Bar!

7. Have a good ABOUT(ME) section.. Most readers will actually go to that section FIRST before reading any of your posts. If they don't like what they "see" they will just click off and forget all about you.

8. When you visit a new Blog and become a new follower or theirs, DO NOT Demand them to follow you back in a comment. It's just not nice.

9. Take good pictures! You dont have to have a fancy Camera to do so... Use LOTS of indirect Natural light and Never Use a Flash.

10. My Tips are just a few to get you started.. Here are 3 of my Favorite Blog Posts Regarding this Subject. Total Must Reads: 15 Basic Blogging Dos and Don'ts, Blogging 101: “Dos” and “Don’ts”, Top 10 Blogging Dos and Don’ts

Tips on How to use MY Freebies: The Printables are pretty self explanatory. Save to you computer, print and enjoy! :)Whenever I post an image as a PNG file, you could use THIS tutorial on how to add them to your pictures. You don't have to have a fancy program like Photoshop to use any of my images. Programs like pixlr.com and sumopaint.com are a wonderful way to start playing around and learning new techniques. You could also visit MAKING CUTE BLOGS to find LOTS and LOTS of blog tutorials!! Awesome site. And last but certainly not least, Shabby Blogs has wonderful Blog Tutorials and will be adding lots more in the near future! :)

Leftover Blocks

Do you remember this quilt? Some friends of ours just became foster parents to a beautiful little girl. I wanted to make a quilt quickly to honor this special time in their lives. While I was searching for patterns and fabric I came across 17 blocks that I didn't need for the first quilt. 16 of them made a perfect baby quilt size - 36" square. The pattern is "Easy Bake" by Cluck Cluck Sew. It's hand quilted with size 8 pink perle cotton.

For the backing I used a pretty retro kitty fabric that I had in my stash. Isn't it sweet? I encourage you to keep leftover blocks. You never know when you will need something in a jiffy. Three large blocks can be a table runner and one large block and be made into a pillow. Your time is cut in half and you have a homemade gift in hardly any time. Sew fun!

Pincushion Pretties

I have been blessed by many friends during this birthday celebration month. I want to share with you over the next few days some of the thoughtful and beautiful gifts I received. My friend, Joyce, gave me this pretty pincushion. The picture doesn't show the detail. The felting of the flowers is exquisite. The little leaf pin is adorable too!

My friend, Char, gave me this vintage pincushion. Holland, MI is not too far from us. It could have been made as a souvenir back in the day. Do you see the little thimble in it's holder? Such a charming shoe. It measures about 4 1/2 inches from heel to point. What a treasure!

I hope this finds you enjoying your Saturday. Yesterday it was 41 degrees, all the snow melted and the sun was shining brightly. We woke this morning to a blanket of snow and cold temps, but the sun is still shining! Beautiful!

I said "yes" to the dress!

Stopped at one of my favorite antique stores yesterday with my daughter. I about flipped when I saw this dress. At $40 I knew it was coming home with me. It will look great at wedding shows as part of the display.

Make Do

Today I want to share some of my goals for 2012 with you. I'm telling you this in the hope that you would help keep me accountable and that I might have some companions on the journey this year. Journeys are much more fun with friends along!

I had many comments last week asking me why I was giving my stash away, and did I have any fabric left? Let me show you my current fabric stash ~

As you can see, I'm not hurting in the fabric department. The amount of things I've accumulated has been weighing heavily on my heart for some time. I'll spare you the knitting cabinet and the book/pattern cabinet so I'll still have some readers when this is post is finished. I admit it, I fell into the marketing trap. New fabrics come out and they aren't available forever, so I would purchase lines I like while I could get them. Then I justified the fabric purchases by buying more books and patterns. Of course, new fabric lines are constantly coming out so the cycle continued. At Christmas I walked in my sewing room and decided it was time to take control.

So this is my plan of action for 2012:

1. No fabric purchasing, none. If I need to buy backing fabric, it will be a solid white or cream so that the yardage left over can be used in piecing.

2. Only items to be purchased are batting, thread and backing fabric.

3. No books or pattern purchasing. If I used every book and every pattern I have, I would not finish these projects in my lifetime. A startling reality.

4. For every quilt I take to the quilter, I must hand/machine quilt two quilts myself. This will help cut down on quilting costs.

5. I will have a giveaway on the first Monday of the month to reduce the amount of sewing, craft and knitting supplies I have. There may also be items I have made or items made by other bloggers.

6. I will donate items to charity. I have already given large cuts of fabric to my church as the college girls are making dresses for African girls. I also have a box of fabric going to a friend who makes quilts for babies of servicemen.

7. I have taken on 3 sewing students who will be able to use my fabric and patterns for class.

I do want to clarify some things. I feel very blessed to have a husband who supports my interests. I, of course, support my designer friends. I absolutely love their work, as you can tell. This will be very difficult for me, but necessary. To help control the urge to shop, I have signed up for a block of the month through Shabby Fabrics. Not only will a small bit of fabric come each month, but I will be perfecting some skills as well. The blocks include piecing, embroidery and applique. I am also doing two quilt alongs, so that with each block I make, I see progress.

What will happen at the end of the year when the fabric and yarn cabinets are empty? I don't know, but I can hardly wait to find out. So here's to a year of being productive, saving money and giving to others. If anyone would like the button, the code is on my sidebar. Pinning and hand stitching a quilt today while I wait for the big storm that is suppose to hit later this afternoon. I love all the happy colors in this Henry Glass fabric. It will make the perfect gift for a new baby girl. I'm trying to decide if I should run to the grocery to stock up. I always chuckle a little on the eve of a snowstorm because the grocery will be out of milk and bread by mid afternoon. If I'm stuck in the house during a blizzard, I'll need more than milk and bread!

Some silliness has set in at our house. My daughter and I have discovered the new Legos for girls. They are darling and fun. I caved and bought the cafe and the design room.

The details are amazing! I get a big kick out of the fact that the ruler is as tall as little Miss Lego's body, and clearly the size of that sandwich (next to the laptop) measures larger than her head. My 17 yr. old wants the whole set, and here I thought we were done with toys!

My daughter and I took a two day whirl wind trip to see my friend, Amy, and do some power shopping. We were on a quest for a dress for an upcoming event. We also wanted to go to Ikea and Anthropologie. We made a stop on the way home at one of my favorite stores "The Potting Shed" and found this vintage necklace and purse to go with her new dress.

I keep meaning to ask the owner why she named the store what she did. It really is a vintage and reproduction wonderland. It has everything you could ever think of and all in aqua, pink, red and yellow. I told her that if I could only go to one store for the rest of my life, this would be it! The reproduction vintage valentine book has 48 valentines in it and was only $5.99.

This beautiful garland is also reproduction. At only $12.99, it will be beautiful on my Easter tree. It was a fun trip. What have you been up to?

I came across this on pinterest yesterday. It struck a chord deep in me. I find that the desire to create is so strong that I can feel out-of-sorts until I take the time to do so. I know that you know exactly what I'm talking about. There are times when I have to step back and tell myself to stop stressing, I'm in control of what I make and there's no need to get all worked up about my self-imposed creative deadlines. Who am I doing this for anyway?

I'm starting out this year by reevaluating why I create, when and how much time I should devote to it and who I am making things for. I am reminding myself that God gave me this ability and I need to let Him direct my creative endeavors - all to His glory! Do I know yet what this will look like? No. But it is a start in the right direction.

This is a big month for me, I have a big birthday and some fun things planned for you, dear friends. This blog is going to have a makeover, which I am very excited about. I have some fun things to share with you. I look forward to the New Year and all it will bring and feel so blessed to have all of you on this journey.

It's snowing here. Christmas felt like spring but I knew it wouldn't last long. We woke to snowcapped roofs yesterday.

I'm struggling with getting back to normal. I still have two Christmas gifts I'm working on. You just can't rush handmade. I'm glad I have people in my life who understand my need to create and don't mind waiting.

I woke up yesterday morning to the sound of silence, how strange to have silence on Christmas morning. The clock read 8:00 a.m. Hmmm…better do a kid check. Oh! 17 yr. old daughter asleep next to me. 21 yr. old son asleep in his room. Is it Christmas morning? I better go check my calendar.

The phone rings and my husband, who has just finished the night shift, wants to know what he's missed. Not a thing, I tell him, you've got perfect timing! And so I swiftly rouse two sleepy heads to remind them it's Christmas morning, pop our breakfast in the oven, and put the coffee on.

We are soon floating in a sea of glitter (note to self: NO glitter wrapping paper next year) and I sit back and watch the three of them enjoy opening gifts, laughing and being silly. At the same time I am reminded of how different our Christmas mornings looked just a few years ago. This is not bad, of course, just different.

I spend the day watching my rather grown-up children interacting with their grandparents and Uncle and I'm reminded that change comes quietly, reminding me to enjoy every moment and to embrace the season of life that we find ourselves in. Let It Snow

Ok friends, if you want to have some fun on facebook, put "Sleigh bells ring are you listening?" as your status and wait for your friends and family to finish the song. It was so much fun. More fun was reading what they thought the words were (perspire for conspire…).

Today I bring you the last quilt I made for this Christmas, "Let It Snow". This quilt was made for my wonderful Mother-in-love. I'm going to be making a runner for her as well with the scraps. I love how Mary, my quilter/friend put the circles on it. Each snowflake is outlined as well.

Making a quilt with batiks was totally out of my comfort zone, a far cry from the pastels that call my name on a regular basis. This was fun, even though the scraps certainly look out of place in my scrap basket.

Thank you for your kind response to yesterday's quilts. Today I want to share with you the quilt I made for my sister-in-law and her husband. I have named it "Comfort & Joy".

This quilt was offered by my local quilt shop as a block of the month. We went to a monthly meeting and were shown new patterns and techniques and then could purchase each monthly block for $5. At the end we had enough blocks to make a quilt and then purchased the rest of the materials to complete it.

Tomorrow I will show you the last of the quilts I made for Christmas. Isn't the gate to the farm just charming? It is such a welcome sight to drive up and see it decorated so beautifully for Christmas. Have a wonderful day!

Our Last Installment of Sewing Christmas

Thank you for taking the "Sewing Christmas" journey with me. Twelve months of sewing gifts have given me many gifts to share not just at Christmas, but over the course of this past year as well. For the next three days I will be sharing quilts I made as presents this Christmas.

My family celebrated Christmas yesterday with my husbands side of the family. I made these two quilts for my adorable nephews, Benjamin and Nathan. The pattern is "One Star" from the book, "Make Room for Christmas Quilts" by Nancy J. Martin.

I took these pictures on Saturday, out at Friendship Farms, the outdoor wedding site that I work at. It was very cold and snowing, a perfect time to snap these photos.

Mary, my quilter and friend did an awesome job of quilting. Each one is quilted differently and show-cased the pattern wonderfully!

These are my cutie-patootie nephews that I made the quilts for. I told Benjamin (in the glasses) that when he is snuggled under his quilt on Christmas Eve, I want him to remember how much I love him. For us quilters, the gift of a quilt is a true expression of our love.

Being Mary in a Martha World

My favorite Snowman wondering where is the snow?

I feel like I've been running a marathon since the Candlelight Dessert last week. Not only am I playing catch up, I'm playing catch in the moment and catch forward. Know what I mean? This week I hosted my annual Bible Study Christmas Brunch, attended the annual Girlfriends Christmas Party and did way too much internet shopping because I don't have time to physically go to the store.

A bit of porch decorating

Today new windows are being installed in my house. I have a wedding to go to tonight, three quilts to bind before Sunday, an empty refrigerator and my son is on his way home from college. All these things are good in an of themselves (except for the empty refrigerator), it's just when it's all happening at the same time I start to feel like I'm standing in one spot twirling.

These two are torturing me to read them

I'm sorry for complaining. I just knew that you would understand. As Mom's, wives and friends, our plate is full and it is good, but I need to work on that balance thingy again. Above all, I need to be thankful. Thankful to the Lord for the gift of His one and only Son. In a Martha world, I need to be more like Mary today (Luke 10:38).

If you are in need of a quick Christmas gift to sew, this runner is the one for you! It's made with half of one charm pack and a smidge of fabric for the border. It comes together quickly and easily and looks much more complicated than it is. The fabric is "Jovial" by Basic Grey.

I can see myself making this runner over and over again. It's great to use with scraps. I love that it's titled "Cinnamon Sticks". So perfect for this time of year.

I had a little visitor perched on my tulip tree. There are lots of squirrels in our neighborhood. The black ones pop out against the snow. This one appeared to be warming it's paws. After 50 degree temps and rain, our snow is gone. I'll enjoy it while I can because here in Michigan, there is more snow on the horizon!

Candlelight Dessert

Every other year my church hosts a women's Candlelight Dessert. The event is offered Thursday and Friday. It is an outreach event to our community. I volunteered to chair the event this year. Over 500 women attended this past week.

The planning meetings begin in September. In October we begin sign-ups for hostesses. The ladies at church have an opportunity to hostess a table and can have a co-hostess. Guest sign-ups begin in November.

Each hostess decorates a table and prepares a dessert for eight women. The men in our church serve coffee, water and hot water for tea. Our program begins with our bell choir and a punch bowl reception in the lobby of the church.

The doors to the Fellowship Center are opened a half hour later and women view the tables for another half hour. This year we had a wonderful young man play the cello while the women were viewing the tables. The room is dark except for the candlelight and the soft white lights throughout the room.

After another half hour, the women are seated and after brief introductions, the desserts are served. Then our program begins and we have special music provided this year by a young women who is a dear friend of my daughter and then a presentation of the gospel message is heard. Our speaker this year is a dynamic woman, who spoke of "A Journey to Surrender".

I love how the napkin looks like whipped cream in the teacup!

We conclude with more music and prayer and an opportunity to fill out a card in response to all that the ladies have heard and experienced throughout the evening.

The stand for the apples came from colonial Williamsburg

Thirty-five ladies responded to God's offer of forgiveness and salvation. Many prayers were answered these two evenings.

It was such a privilege to be a part of the dessert. I was blessed with an amazing group of women who devoted themselves to fulfilling all of the details required to put on such a large event. I now know what the mother-of-the-bride must feel when the wedding she's been planning for months is over. I know that I would do it all again just to witness those thirty-five ladies make the best decision of their lifetime!

Christmas Tour Part III

The tour continues today in the room that my family and friends have named the "Pretty Room". This summer I painted it a lovely shade of blue and paired down all of the items I keep in here. This tree is a flocked tree and shows off the pastel decorations wonderfully.

Years ago my Mom made the ladies and gentlemen dancing garlands from a Martha Stewart pattern.

These garlands make the whole tree. They're made out of scrapbooking paper and embellishments.

The vintage fan got dressed up with some Christmas cards.

The pink ceramic deer goes nicely with the flocked one from yesterday.

My favorite vintage puzzle in my favorite color pink!

Christmas Tour Part II

I have added a new tree this year. A cupcake themed kitchen tree! I sat last night and made row after row of garlands out of mini cupcake liners. This tree makes me happy every time I look at it.

There are little tiny kitchen utensils, candy canes, and ice cream cones mixed in with the cupcakes. Pastel tiny Christmas lights makes it all sparkle!

Little desserts peek out from within the branches as do tiny striped balls that remind me of candy.

During my picture snapping, my friend Char stopped by. She brought me this wonderful pink flocked, glitter coated deer she found at the resale shop she works at.

My happy shout turned into tears of joy as she gave me with this vintage Zondervan box of scripture cards. I have always wanted one of these. Do you see the title? "Daily Manna Promise Box" I just love it! Thank you Char!

Christmas Tour Part I

It has been a slow process for me this year in decorating for Christmas. I am chairing a very large women's event at our church next week which will bring in nearly 600 women. My husband leans more towards Scrooge when it comes to the holidays so I thought I might let some of it go this year.

Imagine my surprise this week when he asked me if I was going to "put up" Christmas this year? After 30 plus years of being together, maybe he does enjoy them after all! So I started in the dining room with my white tree decorated with red and black. There are tiny hats, vintage gloves, little dolls and much more.

This year I added the silver icicles, just like we always had on our tree when I was growing up. Without animals in the house now, or little children, I know it will stay on the tree!

In front of one of the windows I have a little tree decorated with my grandmother's novelty jewelry and ornaments I made by hand. The trimming is a tiny garland made out of sheet music and a felted star.

There is always my favorite doll with my favorite book from my childhood, "The Doll's Christmas". Next week I will take you on a tour of the other trees. Blessings today!

I apologize in advance for the dark photos. Not an ounce of sunlight in the house today and currently it's foggy and cold outside. Last week snow, then 61 degree temps = Michigan weather. BUT, there's flowers and sunshine in my half bath because the new wall paper is in! I just love it! I have fabric to match and need to make a curtain. Yesterday I took the toliet out all by myself. What a disgusting job. Now it's ready for the new floor. I know what you're thinking, shouldn't you do the floor first? Well yes, but we're back to that if you give a Mouse a cookie theory. One thing led to another with the remodel of this room and none of it in proper order. Oh well!

I started adding some Christmas touches to the dining room. I know it's a bit early but I'm excited for this year's Christmas season. I'm already listening to Christmas music. I can't help it.

One wee little fellow made his way onto the buffet. Red scarf, holding the gift of a flower, perched on a peppermint candy, pure sweetness!

Blueberry Crumb Cake

This wonderful book arrived in the mail yesterday. I have been excitedly awaiting it's arrival. Ever since I saw a preview of the fabric online, I was smitten.

I have always loved Blackbird Designs. Their patterns and projects are beautiful. I have been intimidated by their designs in the past thinking they were too challenging for me or too primitive for this shabby girl. I hadn't quilted long enough to think outside the box.

This book and fabric line have changed all that (don't you love that coneflower bed runner?). So what's a girl to do. First buy the book...

and then use the 20% discount code that Fat Quarter Shop sent me to order a layer cake of this wonderful fabric. I've been on fabric lockdown for so long that they've wondered where I was. Such caring people to inquire of me, don't you think? (insert wink)

This is the picture from my house today. Our first snow. I've been singing Christmas carols all day. I'm certain my family will put a stop to that later.

The Last Rose

The weather here today is grey, damp and quiet. Can weather be quiet? I believe so. I don't even hear the birds today. There's one lone woodpecker at the feeder right now.

I was looking out the window at the garden, dull and dying when a shot of pink caught my eye. What on earth? It can't be. Sure enough, when I got out there I saw the very last rose beaming in all it's beauty. I wish I could describe the scent to you, it's amazing. I like to think that the garden left me a parting gift. One last flower until the spring. Thank you.

I started sewing the rows together on my "Let it Snow" quilt yesterday. It's coming along nicely. The last Christmas quilt for this year almost done!

A Penny For Your Thoughts

It's such a pretty fall day today. The air has taken a cooler turn. The colors seem more intense maybe because the sky is so blue.

Where has the time gone this year? Is November really upon us? My mind can't wrap itself around Thanksgiving and Christmas just yet.

A few of the flowers, like this toad lily, are hanging on. The rest of the garden is fading back into the earth. Preparing to rest up for the spring.

Fall Loveliness

Saturday found me out at Friendship Farm waiting to show the grounds to two brides and their families. It was such a gorgeous, crisp fall day that I decided to take some photos. The neighbor's sheep wasn't too thrilled to have it's photo taken. If someone had shot me from behind I'd be mad as a wet hen.

There's nothing like fall on a farm. the colors seem more vivid and the air more clear. I find myself much more contemplative when I'm here. God and I have had some good walks around the property.

We booked the farm that day for a special bride. The soon-to-be wife to the son of a dear friend of mine. There were lots of good tears to go around. A day I will not soon forget.

I'm cutting out my latest Christmas gift project. Not one for batiks, I couldn't resist this beautiful snowflake fabric. I may be a batik believer yet.

This is the pattern I'm making with it. I am going to love sewing this together. Sweet blessings for a wonderful Tuesday!

Do you ever have a day where you feel like you've got lead in your feet? I think I've sewed so much over the past few days that I'm a bit dingy. My family would probably tell you I'm a bit dingy anyway.

I feel like I sewed a mile of binding strips yesterday. Inching closer to completion of two Christmas quilts for my adorable nephews. I'm right on track for Christmas this year which is not usually the case. I can credit it to my "Sewing Christmas" project. Now if I could get the rest of my life organized, I'd be pleased!

My Maddie had her homecoming dance this past weekend. We always have so much fun shopping together for these events. When I look at her I still see the feisty 4 yr. old, with one hand on her hip, ordering me around. It's hard for me to believe she's 17 (and still ordering me around!).

We found the dress and shoes online at Anthropologie. I'm digging those shoes. Even though we wear the same size, my feet throb at the thought of those heels.

A sweet dress...sweater top and tulle skirt. An outfit meant for twirling with a special boy on a special night.

The new lights came from a local lighting store called "Hodgson's".

I don't remember the brand because I threw out the boxes~sorry!

Yes, I did make the bow-tie quilt on the wall, one of my favorites.

New Lighting

I awoke this morning to a glittering yard. The frost was thick and the urge to snuggle in and eat something yummy grabbed me. So I went to my trusted Farm Chicks book and made the apple puff pastry recipe that never fails. It was extra special using the apples that my daughter picked herself.

Yesterday I had some new kitchen lights installed. It's so dark in our house and with the winter approaching I know how fleeting daylight is in Michigan.

The light over the table is a bigger version of the one over the kitchen island. It illuminates everything so nicely.

I love how the pink island stands out with the new lights. The island is certainly the focal point of the kitchen.

It's amazing how lighting can change the look of a room. I like the crispness of the black with the pastels. Another check off on the home improvement list!

Sewing Christmas

Here we are, month ten of "Sewing Christmas". I can hardly believe it. I'm very excited today to share with you my Log Cabin Christmas quilt.

For those of you have been reading my blog for awhile you know that I have been working on this quilt for a very long time.

In all my years of quilting I have never made a log cabin quilt. I can tell you without a doubt, this quilt won't be the only one I make with this wonderful block. This quilt is a biggie, made for our king size bed.

The design possibilities for the log cabin block are endless. It's a great quilt for a beginner and looks complicated, but it's not!

I made the quilt for my husband. He's seen me working on it so it's not a surprise. I will put it on our bed as soon as Thanksgiving is done. I'm hoping to find some pretty sheets to go with it.

Here is a close up of the quilting as well as some of the prints. My favorite is the "Merry Christmas" musical fabric (and the holly, the cherries, the polka dots...).

This week has flown by. I can't believe I haven't had a post since Monday! I need to figure out how to slow down a bit. The fog is heavy today so maybe the grey skies will keep me inside.

A lot of Christmas sewing is going on here. I can't wait until next week's "Sewing Christmas" to show you a special gift I made for my husband. He's seen me working on it and I can't wait to share it with all of you!

I got out my favorite Christmas quilting book last week and got started on a new project. I love working with the colors of Christmas.

If you need any inspiration to get you motivated to start working on gifts, pick up any of the Christmas magazines that are hitting the shops, they are great this year!
