Time for Chores

I have spent such a great amount of time working on wedding details that I have fully neglected my home to the point of being embarrassed around my own family.  So today I am spending a good deal of time cleaning.

When I was growing up my Mom always set aside one day a week to clean house.  Try as I may, I just can't discipline myself to do it.  I wait until I can't stand it any longer and then I frantically clean.  My trick is to keep the house free of clutter, it looks clean that way.

I know I just make more work for myself.  Once the cleaning is done, I'm so pleased with the way everything looks that I tell myself I'll do it again next week, that it won't be so much work, but then I'm back at my sewing machine forgetting all about the little talk I had with myself.  I hope that you are doing something fun today, instead of cleaning!

The Rehearsel

Friday found me helping to prepare for the rehearsal dinner and in the evening, helping to keep things running smoothly.  It was a beautiful day, not much humidity and no rain.  Here's pictures to enjoy, starting with the sign Chelsea made.  Isn't it adorable?

There were old-fashioned games to enjoy, like croquet...

and Bingo!

Fun centerpieces

and food!

What event is complete without quilts?

Polka dot oil cloth and engagement photos

Water, Lemonade and Iced Tea in pretty containers

A fun time for everyone!

I'll have some wedding photos tomorrow!

A Thankful Heart

I want to thank you for all of your heartfelt comments.  Each comment felt like a reassuring hand on my shoulder, and blessed me more than I can express.  This is the first death of a parent that we have experienced and there has been such a range of emotions for so many reasons.  The service was beautiful.  My son read scripture, Ecclesiastes 3: 1-14 and my daughter sang "His Great Name" while playing her guitar.  My adorable nephew who is 6 yrs. old read some scripture as well.  There is something that reaches down into the core of your being when you watch your son carry his Grandfather's casket.  I was reminded again of the brevity of our earthly life and the wonderful promises of eternity with Jesus.

I was able to see my cherished friend, Gina (Geeg), at the visitation.  Gina was my maid-of-honor 23 years ago this August 15.  She handed me this gift, which I will treasure.  It is a picture of Gina and I at her wedding this past fall.  I love that the frame looks like a quilt.  I have known Gina since junior high.  We took Home Ec class together and she still teases me about the "ugly jumper with the mushrooms" that I made.  It was the early 70's!  Gina, my husband and I graduated together in 1980.  We spent some wonderful holidays with her big Italian family eating pasta and turkey.  Gina, if you are reading this, I am short, but you must have been standing on the platform, cuz I'm not that short, am I?

This is wedding week for Chelsea so her soon-to-be Mother-in-love, Diane and I spent part of the day checking off things from her to-do list.  I was glad to get out of the house and clear my mind a bit.  We stopped at Goodwill.  I found this necklace for $5.  It was so unusual that I couldn't pass it up.

I struck gold on the vintage sheet find with this pretty number.  It survived the scalding hot water wash so it will be added to the rest of the group.  I have such a yearning to quilt but I've got 3 weddings in the next two weeks and I'm doing the flowers and bouquet for one.  No quilting for me.

Diane found this pretty vintage pillowcase at an estate sale and gave it to me today.  I'm thinking that if I have hit the 20 mark with vintage linens, then I might do a "Turning Twenty" quilt.  I really shouldn't start another quilt until I've finished this.  The bane of my existence...

For Today

I've been sitting here at the computer and for once, am at a loss for words.  There has been a lot going on behind the scenes that I haven't been able to share.  I can tell you that my Father-in-law did not get better and after a month in the hospital, has passed away.  Today is the funeral.  I've had to do and say many things in the past few days that I've never done before, some good and some very hard.  I look forward to getting back to posting about happy things but, for today, I've got to go do a few more hard things and hope that I can be bold enough to ask you to keep my family in your prayers.

Let's be a blessing today,

Sunday Scripture

"This is how we know what love is:
Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.
And we ought to lay down our lives
for our brothers.  If anyone has material
possessions and sees his brother in need
but has no pity on him, how can the love
of God be in him?  Dear children, let us
not love with words or tongue but with
actions and in truth."

1 John 3:16-18

A Saturday Stroll

I saw the strangest thing the other day, a chipmunk had crawled up my hollyhock plant to the very top.  He was peeking over the fence in my yard.  He took one look at me and jumped, I hope he's alright.  Perhaps he thought I was pretty strange too.  I wish I had gotten a picture but I knew he wouldn't hold the pose for long.  Let's take a midsummer look at the garden...

I will remember the garden this winter when the snow is blowing and the beds are bare.  I will forgive the Japanese beetle for devouring my hollyhocks (at least the roses are still intact).  It truly has been a good summer in the garden.  I hope you are finding time to enjoy creation today!
