Flea Market Finds

I decided to take myself outside, brave the bitter cold and go treasure hunting.  I'm drawn to children's things for sure.  This little cutie cost $5 and now I just need to find/make a little doll to sit in it.
I couldn't pass this darling lamb planter up.  I have a friend who loves lambs and even though she knows it will be coming her way at some point I wanted to share it with you first.  An $8 find.  I love the blue.
I had just done the post on my scripture plates and look what I found!  $4.50 spent on an addition to my collection.  Isn't it pretty?
I couldn't get past the smocking on this little number.  It looks like it has never been worn.  I remember my baby who's now 15 wearing precious dresses like this.  Oh the sweetness of the memory.  I hope you enjoy your Saturday and can get out and enjoy yourself no matter the weather!

The Garden Gate Cafe

Today I want to take you on a tour of my friend Nancy's restaurant located in Shipshewana, Indiana in the heart of Amish country.
It is truly one of the most cheerful places I have ever been in.  There is so many treasures to be found and colors to absorb.  It's not just a treat for your palate, but a treat for your senses as well.
She makes the best cupcakes I have ever had and is responsible for ruining my diet.  They also have wonderful food and to-die-for soups which Nancy's husband Doug helps to make as well.
Nancy has done cupcakes for many a wedding and caters to the surrounding businesses providing box lunches as well as other take out items.  I love all the pretty dishes she has on display.
There is always some new item to look at and she finds the cutest cupcake related goods to sell to many a loyal customer.  Nancy has such a big heart and has helped many people by holding special fundraising dinners.
Cute wall hangings can be found all over the shoppe.  Many of them are made by artist friends of hers.
I love this whimsical Christmas tree that she keeps out year round.  The colors are just gorgeous.
Nancy sells a lot of vintage inspired oil cloth.  I use the pink with yellow and red roses in my kitchen.
How fun to sit at this cozy table and enjoy the vintage artwork above it.  Such a happy place!
These cute jammies found their way into my hands and out to my car...I couldn't resist!  Enjoy your day today, be blessed!

T-Shirt Quilts

Do you remember about a week ago I had mentioned that I was frantically trying to get some quilts off to the quilter?  I thought I would share one with you that just came back and I finished binding.  This t-shirt quilt was a special order.  About this time of year the orders start coming in for graduation gifts.  Last year I made 8 of these in about a three month span.
This one is for a boy and I was quite pleased with the way it turned out.  I have to set my shabby chic self aside when I use the batik fabric.
You really feel like you get to know a person when you make one of these quilts.  I feel like I've taken a walk through their life.  I made one for my son for his high school graduation last year that he took to college with him.  I used almost 35 shirts for his, the usual being twenty.  A lot of creative piecing, but it was worth it.  We hung it up at his graduation party and all the guests took their own walk through his life.  I really love quilting.  I'm so glad that God gave me something to do with my hands.  Have a blessed day using your hands for creating in whatever way He directs.

Lemon Tree Studio

I have so enjoyed my entrance into the blogosphere and I am thrilled at discovering artists/bloggers from all over the world.  I just can't resist sharing the talents of Shelly from Lemon Tree Studio.  I came across her work through her blog, My Lily Eden.  The blog, like her work is bright, happy and cheerful. She is a talented writer as well and you will enjoy her blog tremendously.  I sent away for a little gift to myself...
This is what I found when I opened the mailing envelope  How happy is that?  It felt like Christmas morning all over again!
Inside was this adorable box, which is a treat in itself.  I hadn't even gotten to my purchase yet, and the box had me at "hello".
But, THIS is what I received.  This beautiful, scrumptious, handmade necklace.  The colors are true eye candy indeed.  How about that turquoise rose?  Ooh la la...
I will be hosting a wedding shower this June for my friend, Diane's, soon-to-be daughter-in-love, Chelsea and I will be planning my dress around this necklace.  Not shoes, not purse, but around this gorgeous necklace.  After you finish looking at all the handmade goodies from Lemon Tree Studios, you'll have to check out Shelly's other shops Material Gal for fabric and Lemon Blooms for vintage goods.  Have a joyful day!

Scripture and Roses

I was looking around the Pretty Room and noticed how many pieces of pottery I have with scripture verses and poems on them.  They always seem to find me at flea markets and jump into my hands.  Really, I don't have a choice, they must come home with me.
Many of them are adorned with beautiful roses and painted with gold trim.  They are such a lovely reminder of a gentler time in our society.
I particularly like this planter with the soft shades of pink dogwood.  Most of these pieces aren't marked so I don't know who made them, but I'm really glad they did.
The roses on this plate are so pretty.  This plate reads, "Give us this day our daily bread".  Let that be our prayer today, with thanksgiving.

Be blessed,

About Me - Part Two

I am afraid of flying.

I'm not a candy person.

I love the sound of bible pages turning in church.

I've learned that not having clutter makes a house look clean.

Peonies are my favorite flower.

I learned how to knit, sew and quilt as an adult.

The Color of Water is one of the best books I have ever read.

I find great pleasure in giving gifts.

I secretly dream of living on a farm.

I believe the cupcake is the perfect dessert.

Often times I'm perfectly happy in silence, no music or television.

I love being a Mother...

Sunday Scripture

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating.
Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked
him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?
"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear O
Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: "Love
your neighbor as yourself.  There is no commandment greater
than these."  Mark 12:28-31

Salakazoo's

My friend, Sally, of Salakazoo's makes the most incredible things out of recycled wool sweaters.  She was doing it a long time before it became immensely popular.  She made me this beautiful pillow for my birthday last month.
This little flower she put on the back hides her tag.  Is that cute or what?  Every year I put my request in for a handmade birthday present from her.  So far, she hasn't turned me down yet!
This scrumptious bag was last years birthday surprise.  I always get a lot of compliments whenever I use it.  She has such a great way of blending colors and textures.  I''m amazed at her creativity.
She has done more than one pair of mittens for me.  Currently she is working (right Sally?) on mittens in my sons college colors for me (I'm so bad).  My daughter and I share these, her high school colors are orange and brown, ugly cheerful colors that they are!  I had so many people coming up to me that Sally could have sold a pair to about 100 people during football season.  I am truly blessed to be around so many creative women and so many creative bloggers.  It certainly is a blast to sit down at the computer and see what you all have dreamed up for me to enjoy.  Thank you!

My Valentine's Day Quilt

I almost forgot to put up my Valentine's day quilt this year.  Sometimes, when I make a quilt for a specific season I don't remember that I have it until the last minute.  So, up on the wall it went before the day comes and goes.
The pattern is out of Nancy J. Martin's book, "Make Room for Christmas Quilts".  It's a really good book filled with wonderful decorating ideas as well as quilt patterns.  I have made a couple of quilts from it and there are a few more I'd like to do.
This quilt is much brighter than I normally do and if I had to do it all over again, I would not have chosen red and green, it reminds me too much of Christmas even though the green went with the block motif very well.  Still, a fun project that certainly brightens my corner of the snow filled world.  Asking the Lord to help you accomplish all your tasks today!

Just in Time for Valentine's Day

Do any of you miss Country Home Magazine as much as I do?  I was feeling very hopeful about a possible return when I found that their website is still up and running.  Country Home has this pattern available just in time for Valentine's Day.  This pretty pin is really simple to make and the pattern is available for you to print.
Another great Valentine's idea comes from Koralee at Bluebird Notes but you will have to start it now for next year.  She got each of her daughters a journal and wrote in it everyday for one year.  365 entries on what she loves about them.  How cool is that?  What a special gift they will cherish forever.  I think it would make a great gift for our husbands too, wouldn't they be surprised?
And for those of us who are craving a sweet treat for Valentine's Day, Bakerella has this recipe for Big Love Butterscotch Cookie.  I can't even imagine how many times I would have to go to the gym to work that off.  Have a blessed day thinking about all the ways you can make your dear ones smile this Valentine's Day!

Joyfully,
